Northern English Setter Society
Open Show
15th July 2017

It was indeed a pleasure to judge the NESS Anniversary Open show and I would like to thank exhibitors not only for the very flattering entry but also for the delightful way my decisions were taken. You are a very sporting bunch and long may this continue. This is a breed very close to my heart having spent many of my younger days at Oldholbans, growing up with them. They are an absolute delight to judge with their soft, welcoming expressions and endless tail wagging. It is a breed that just cannot help but make you smile…quite simply, adorable!

I had the pleasure of judging some excellent examples of the breed today and there were some very close decisions. On another day I could quite easily end up with some different placings in some classes.

However, fronts were the main drag today. Many are either too straight in angulation or wide at elbow with no depth of chest. This leads to a lack of forward reach and some pinning in quite badly. Hind angulation is not a major problem in the breed as such, however when married to a straighter angled front, balance goes out the window and it shows itself only too well on the move with many side winding.

Veteran D/B
1: Dennis’ SH CH MARIGLEN BEAUTIFUL DAWN, what a fabulous bitch to start the day. Completely feminine and typical. Delightful head and expression, on the stack she ooze quality, with a decent neck, good front assembly and strong topline. Balanced behind, she uses herself well on the move and her tail never stops. Quite lovely. BVIS
2: Lawson’s SH CH MARIGLEN ICE CRYSTAL, another very decent bitch for type, loved her head and expression, not quite the shoulder of the winner but again a strong topline and balanced behind. Moved with panache and used her tail constantly
3: Hutchinson’s MARIGLEN DANCING BRAVE OVER MONAYSIDE

Dogs
Puppy
1: Schoneville & Derry’s HAWKLAWN KHAMSIN, decent o/b boy with a masculine and pleasing head and expression. Scores in ribbing and depth of chest for his age. Balanced in outline, he has a strong topline and well set tail. Super behind and good bone and feet. On the move he is a little loose coming on but this will only tighten. Looks good in profile. One with a future.
2: Lewis’ BOURNEHOUSE SILVER FLAME FOR STARSETTA, tri boy who is all legs and wings at present. Just needs to drop in chest as he is a tad narrow. Good bone, in good coat and he uses his tail. Delightful temperament and that's what matters.

Junior
1: Carty’s GAMERIGHTS PHEONIX FROM THE FLAME, interesting class and I'm sure the first 3 particularly, will changes places. Very decent tri dog of type. Like his head and expression strong neck and good topline. Best front assembly of the class and he is balanced behind. Uses himself on the move particularly in profile. Liked him.
2: Pitts’ WANDSFELL CALL ON ME, on initial look around thought this very typical boy would be my winner. He has a very good head and expression, strong neck in to firm topline. Decent front and well let down behind. Just a tad erratic today coming towards me and he could have used his tail a tad more on the move and so had to pay the price. Liked him very much though.
3: Watkins’s VALSETT STARLIGHT ROMANCER

Yearling
1: Watkins & Phillips’ BUMLEDPRN WINTER ICE AT GLENMAURANGI, light tri boy beautifully presented and handled. He has a masculine head and soft expression. Strong neck and firm topline. Well set tail and uses it well on the move. Decent shoulder and balanced angulation behind. Moved on the right track and kept his outline in profile
2: Jennings’ CANTERIS COOL FOR CATZ, another very decent blue boy and I loved his head and expression. Front ok and his topline was good on the stack. Possibly a little long in loin and in profile movement he just lost his topline which cost him the class. In good condition and moved well out and back.
3: Mellish’s WATTLEWOOD SILVER ARROW TO MONBREC

Novice
1: Schoneville & Derry’s HAWKLAWN KHAMSIN
2: Pitts’ WANDSFELL CALL ON ME

Grad
1: Martin’s QUENSHA CAST NO SHADOW OVER SUNHOUSE, very smart dark tri with a delightful head and truly melting expression. Decent front, good for ribbing and strong topline and loin. Well let down behind, he's uses himself very well on the move.
2: Sharples’ KANIETTER SILVERSTONE, o/b with a masculine head and decent expression. Good neck and topline, front ok but would just prefer a little more angulation behind for balance. Moved on the right track and uses his tail

Limit
1: Wale & Bailey’s WANSLEYDALE KING’S MAGIC, another interesting class and the first two, although slightly different in type, could easily change places. This orange boy has the most delightful outline on the stack, completely balanced and typical. Lovely head and expression decent neck into strong, firm topline. Ok in front, and well let down behind being short from hock to heel. On the move in profile he can never be overlooked being proud in attitude with head held high and an aristocratic look to him. Stepped up in the challenge to win BD in excellent company. RBIS
2: Montell & Harris’s CULVERWELL SUMMER NIGHTS AT LYNWOOD, liked this tri boy very much with a glorious head and expression. Quality all through, balanced and symmetrical. He is so very typical and is made well. It was splitting hairs but he just lost his topline slightly in profile today and this cost him the class. Should be a title holder. RBD
3: Sykes’ DARAQUIST BARRY A REEF
Open
1: Mauriks’ VANQUISH MOVE FORWARD, Dark blue boy who scores on the move and this is where he clinched the class. Real old fashioned head and expression, balanced in angulation and very pleasing for type. Good on the out and back and really eye catching in profile.
2: Danks-Kemish’s SH CH RAVENSETT JAILHOUSE ROCKS ALOLFRAN, Stacked up this boy is extremely eye catching with his very typical outline. Another with a lovely had and expression. In superb condition well handled. He lost out today in front assembly and action as he was a tad erratic coming towards me.
3: Carty’s IR CH WANSLEYDALE WOODPECKER

Bitches
Minor Puppy
1:  Seaman’s MARIGLEN CLEOPATRA, very promising 8 month old blue girl with a pleasing expression. Very good to go over and scores on the move where she is precise and stylish …. Certain future I’m sure

Puppy
1: Loakes’ GOLDBIRCH WINGS OF DESIRE, gorgeous tri puppy whose has champion stamped all over her. She is so well made and screams type. Elegant, proud and has that indefinable look of quality. Stood she took my breath away and I prayed that she could move just as well…… I needn’t have worried, she was faultless. I loved her…. BPIS
2: Jarvis’ HAWKLAWN SUMMER BREEZE, very typical and balanced dark tri girl with a lot to like. Another who was good to go over and she moved on the right track. Unlucky to meet 1 but she too has a future
3: Bishop’s SORBUS PLAYS THE FOOL AT DRYHAM

Junior
1: Danks-Kemish’s WANSLEYDALE SOLITARY BEE AMONG ALOLFRANA, blue who is pleasing for type. Liked her head and expression. Well ribbed and in good coat. Balanced in angulation, she moved on the right track
2:  Stirk’s MARIGLEN NIGHT AND DAY OVER GRAKAR, tri girl who forgot to get dressed this morning but she presents a balanced outline and is typical. Pleasing head and expression, strong neck and uses her tail all the time. Once in coat will do well.
3: Owen’s MARIGLEN CANDLE IN THE WIND

Yearling
1: Dennis’ MARIGLEN SWEET PEA, beautiful orange girl who scores so highly for type. Delightful head and expression, super stylish in the move, so balanced in angulation and one for the top when she gains just a little in confidence.
2: Danks-Kemish’s WANSLEYDALE SOLITARY BEE AMONG ALOLFRANA
3: Bozier’s VICTORIAVIEW LILY

Novice
1: Jarvis’ HAWKLAWN SUMMER BREEZE
2: Danks-Kemish’s WANSLEYDALE SOLITARY BEE AMONG ALOLFRANA

Graduate
1: Taylor’s WANSLEYDALE BELLINI, 3 lovely bitches headed this class and I’m sure they will battle it out on many occasions. This dark orange bitch is just glorious for type, with the sweetest of heads and the softest of expressions. So balanced, elegant and so well constructed, she is a certain title holder. To go over there is very little one would change, she is so quintessentially English! She was the one that I kept being drawn too and she pulled out all the stops. Couldn’t deny her top honours, BB and BIS. Simply delightful
2: McCabe’s RACHDALE ELEGANCE, slightly larger but still extremely feminine. She too has the most delightful head and expression. Fabulous outline and completely balanced. Another who shouldn’t be overlooked in profile, she was, however, just a little untidy coming towards me today and so had to pay the price.
3: Grimsdell’s TATTERSETT CLEVER COOKIE

Post Graduate
1: Loynd’s CRIMBLEDALE SEAING STARS, really delightful orange bitch that I have seen before and I still hold her in very high esteem. She oozes type, has the most gorgeous head and expression, so well made and moved on the right track. In excellent condition RBB in excellent competition. Deserving of a title and I hope she gets one.
2: Schoneville & Derry’s BALVENIE EVITA, another very typical dark tri who scores highly in head and expression. Another good to go over but not as positive behind as the winner today
3: Hacking’s BENRAE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

Limit
1: Wilson’s UPPERWOOD UNFORGETTABLE AT ABIWROSE, Good class, super orange bitch who could possibly benefit from a sounder handler. She is super for type with a delightful head and expression, really good to go over and she puts her feet in the right place. With luck should carry a title
2: Sykes’ DARAQUIST ABBI RIGINAL, another decent orange, again with a really pleasing head and expression. Slightly longer cast than the winner but typy and sound
3: Williamson’s BALVENIE GONE WITH THE WIND

Open
1: Mauricks’ VANQUISH LOVE OF ROSE, old fashioned type and very good to go over, completely balanced and in excellent condition. Moved very well in profile, perhaps a tad erratic going away
2: Grimsdell’s GILLANCETTE PEBBLES FOR TATTERSET, super for type and in fabulous condition. Lovely head with a soft expression, just a little untidy in front today but she should easily carry a title
3: Mugford’s QUENSHA SUMMER NIGHTS AT LYNWOOD
